SpeedX Says “Return to Sender” — What Happens Next?
Why SpeedX returns packages, exactly what happens to your order after that, and what you need to do to get it resolved.
Seeing “Return to Sender” on your SpeedX tracking is one of the more alarming status updates you can get — and also one of the more confusing ones. Unlike “Delivered” or “Out for Delivery,” Return to Sender doesn’t tell you much on its own. It doesn’t say why. It doesn’t say where your package is going. And it definitely doesn’t tell you how to get your order.
This guide covers exactly what Return to Sender means in the SpeedX system, the most common reasons it happens, what physically happens to your package after that status appears, and the correct steps to take to get your order resolved.
What “Return to Sender” Actually Means
When SpeedX marks a package as “Return to Sender” (sometimes shown as “RTS” in tracking), it means SpeedX has determined the package cannot be delivered to the address on the shipping label and is sending it back to the original sender — in most cases, that’s the retailer you ordered from (SHEIN, Temu, AliExpress, etc.).
This is a carrier-initiated decision, not something you triggered. SpeedX doesn’t return packages because of anything you did in an app or on a website. The return happens because something about the physical delivery situation made it impossible for SpeedX to complete the delivery after one or more attempts.
Critically: Return to Sender is not the same as a lost package. Your package exists and is accounted for — it’s just heading in the wrong direction.
Why SpeedX Returns a Package — The Most Common Causes
Understanding why your package is being returned helps you prevent it from happening again and tells you what information to have ready when you contact support.
1. Address Issues
This is the most common cause of SpeedX RTS situations. Address problems include:
- Missing apartment or unit number — one of the most frequent causes. SpeedX drivers cannot deliver to a building or complex without knowing which specific unit
- Incorrect street number or street name — a typo at checkout that sends the package to a non-existent or wrong address
- Unrecognized address format — some newer developments, rural routes, or non-standard addresses don’t resolve correctly in SpeedX’s routing system
- PO Box addresses — SpeedX is a last-mile carrier using drivers and vehicles, not a postal service. They generally cannot deliver to PO Boxes
2. Multiple Failed Delivery Attempts
If SpeedX attempts delivery multiple times and cannot complete it — nobody home for a signature-required package, no safe drop-off location, gated access without a code — the package eventually gets marked for return rather than continuing to hold it at the facility indefinitely.
3. Recipient Refused the Package
If you or someone at your address physically refused to accept the delivery when the driver arrived — or if you wrote “Refused / Return to Sender” on an unopened package and left it out for collection — SpeedX will process it as an RTS. Since the package was not opened, you are in a favorable position to refuse or return it. Writing “Refused / Return to Sender” on the package is a recognized return method, though for SpeedX specifically you should also contact their support to arrange formal collection rather than simply leaving it out.
4. Package Held Too Long Without Resolution
If a package is held at a SpeedX facility due to an address issue or delivery exception, and the issue isn’t resolved within SpeedX’s holding window, the package gets returned rather than held indefinitely. This is why acting quickly when you see an address exception flag in tracking is critical — delays lead directly to RTS.
5. Dangerous Goods or Prohibited Items
If a package is flagged during processing as containing items SpeedX cannot transport — certain hazardous materials, oversized items that exceeded declared dimensions, or items requiring documentation that wasn’t provided — it will be returned to sender.
What Physically Happens to Your Package After RTS
Once SpeedX marks a package Return to Sender, here’s the sequence of events:
Step 1 — Package is pulled from delivery queue. The package is removed from active delivery routing and staged for return processing at the SpeedX facility handling it.
Step 2 — Return shipment is processed. SpeedX initiates the return logistics — the package enters a return routing workflow that sends it back toward the original shipper. Depending on the volume at the facility and the distance to the return destination, this can take several days to begin moving.
Step 3 — Package travels back to the retailer. The return journey is essentially the reverse of the original delivery — from your local SpeedX facility back through their hub network to the origin point. For SHEIN and Temu orders originating from international warehouses, this return journey can take significantly longer than the original delivery since the package may need to travel back to China.
Step 4 — Retailer receives the return. Once the retailer receives the returned package, their return processing system kicks in — which determines what happens with your refund or reshipment.
The total time from RTS status to retailer receipt varies significantly — from a few days for domestic US retailers to several weeks for packages returning to international warehouses.
What to Do Right Now — Step by Step
The moment you see Return to Sender in your SpeedX tracking, the clock starts. Here’s the correct order of actions:
Step 1: Act Immediately — Don’t Wait
RTS situations are much easier to resolve before the return journey begins than after. If you contact SpeedX quickly enough after the status appears, there may be a window to intercept the package and correct the issue before it leaves the facility.
Step 2: Contact SpeedX via Miles
Go to speedx.io and open the Miles chatbot (available 8am–8pm ET daily). Report the RTS status and provide your correct, complete delivery address — including your full apartment or unit number, gate code, building name, or any access information that was missing or incorrect.
SpeedX can check whether the package is still at a local facility and whether the return can be halted and redelivery attempted. This is time-sensitive — if the package has already departed on the return journey, SpeedX has limited ability to redirect it.
Step 3: Contact Your Retailer in Parallel
Don’t wait for SpeedX to respond before contacting your retailer. Contact SHEIN, Temu, AliExpress, or whoever you ordered from at the same time. This is important for two reasons:
First, your retailer can often see the full logistics chain on their end and may have more information about why the RTS was triggered than SpeedX’s consumer support can provide.
Second, if the return cannot be intercepted, your retailer is the party that will ultimately process your refund or reshipment — and starting that conversation early gets you in line sooner.
For SHEIN: App → “Me” → “Orders” → select order → “Contact Customer Service” For Temu: App → “Your Orders” → select order → “Get Help” For AliExpress: “My Orders” → select order → “Open Dispute” → “I didn’t receive my order”
Step 4: Verify Your Shipping Address
Before requesting a reshipment, verify the exact shipping address on your account — including apartment number, zip code, and any access details. If the original RTS was caused by an address error, a reshipment to the same uncorrected address will result in another RTS.
Update your address in the retailer’s app before requesting a reshipment and specifically confirm with the customer service agent that the new address is correct and complete.
Step 5: Request Reshipment or Refund
Once your retailer has confirmed the return is in process and your address is corrected, request either a reshipment or a refund based on your preference and the retailer’s policy.
Most major retailers (SHEIN, Temu) will offer a reshipment at no additional charge for RTS situations caused by carrier or address issues. For situations where you refused the package yourself, policies vary — some retailers will reship and charge a new shipping fee, while others may deduct the original shipping cost from a refund.
Can You Stop a Return to Sender in Progress?
Sometimes — but only if you act very quickly. Once the RTS status appears, there’s a narrow window during which the package may still be physically at the local SpeedX facility before beginning its return journey.
Contacting SpeedX via Miles immediately after seeing the RTS status — ideally within the same business day — gives you the best chance of having the delivery reattempted rather than returned. If you can provide a corrected address or missing access information at this stage, SpeedX may be able to pull the package from the return queue and attempt delivery again.
Once the package has physically departed the local facility on its return route, SpeedX’s ability to redirect it is very limited. At that point, your only path is to wait for the return to complete and then work with your retailer for a reshipment.
How to Prevent Return to Sender on Future Orders
Most SpeedX RTS situations are preventable. Here’s what reduces the risk:
Always include your complete apartment or unit number. This is the single most common cause of last-mile RTS situations. Every address field matters — building name, unit number, floor, and any suite or apartment designation.
Add delivery instructions before your package arrives. Contact SpeedX via Miles once you have an active SPX tracking number and add specific access instructions — gate codes, building intercom numbers, safe drop-off locations — before the first delivery attempt.
Double-check your address at checkout. Old saved addresses and autofill errors are surprisingly common. Take 10 seconds to verify the address before placing every order.
Enable tracking notifications. Sign up for SpeedX delivery alerts through their tracking portal so you know immediately when an exception or delivery issue occurs — giving you maximum time to respond before a situation escalates to RTS.
